Millionaire
« on: February 15, 2007, 11:39:24 AM »
Someone was asking for some ideas about year-end revirew activities. Well, here's a listening activity that is fun and easy:

-You play the game show host and read the questions, and the 4 possible answers to each.
-The kids circle the one they think is correct on their answer sheet.

Also give each kid a 50/50 card so that if they get stuck they can raise their hand and you go over and cross off two of the incorrect answers and collect their lifeline card. Then re-read the question.

The concept is simple, and the questions can be catered for anything.
I use the textbook, asking both obvious and also obscure questions. Afterwards I get the kids to take out their textbooks and we hunt for the answers together.

I have attached the one I just used for the grade 3 kids this year based on the Sunshine 3 book...
(15 questions takes about 30 minutes or so)

Hey Paul,

I used these as a warm-up for my final classes with my 3rd years today.  They got a kick out of it.  Good job, and thanks!

I added another lifeline (using the 50/50 as a template) It was "Take a Peek" They get a minute to look for the answer. They realled loved it. I also turned the lights on and off and all the kids made the theme music. At the end - um, well they all won, I printed million dollar bills for them each and now they're running around the school, just as blissed out as can be. I'm in trouble if I ever open the Kim shop.

Cool -I am glad to hear you guys had some success with this idea.

And that extra lifeline idea is a good one too. I'll have to use it next time.
Probably students would be more willing to use one of them if they have two to begin with. The questions I used this year were not quite as tricky as the ones I made up for last year -so I only had a couple students willing to surrender their lifeline cards this time.

This is essentially a listening activity, but it's one everyone can participate in regardless of their abilities. And looking up the answers together afterwards is a lot of fun too.

Yeah - actually, they used the Peak lifeline but not the 50/50. As you said before, they really looking in their books. If you only give them a minute (which is plenty it adds to the pressure).

Ha-ha, that is great.
I will definately try that next time. But I think I am the kind of teacher to only give them about 15 seconds or so though... :-D

And since next week is my last week with the ichi-nen kids this year, I made up some questions based on the Sunshine 1 text.
Also, I'm gonna use Kim's "peek" idea, so I made a second lifeline card (they're gonna need it )

Paul you deserve a night in your honor for all this great stuff you post. You just saved my life. The year is basicaly over, the final tests are done and the book is basically finished. Then my jte cancelled and I had NO idea what I was gonna do. I used this for 2nd year and created new questions. It was great!

I'll attach my 2nd year version along with the cards for "Sneak Peek" and "Ask A Friend"

I strongly advise looking it over cause my questions are so so, I had to wip it up in about an hour so I was rushed. Made 20 questions, took the whole class.

Shit I can't post them cause the uploader is full. Freddie?

Should be OK now. I added another 30mb of space. I think we have loads of space, so go ahead and load this stuff for people.

I will also check with zhuzhu too though.

Here's one I made for my fiorst years from New Crown - You might want to change the questions a little.

Sorry - the file name is the same as Paul's (I think so keep it in mind when downloading)

It's getting to that time - review.

For those of you who haven't seen Paul's awesome Millionaire game, here it is.

I recommend downloading the music or recording it off youtube or something.

Glad this is still getting some use.
I just did this with my grade 1 kids a week or so ago.
Dr. Gibbon's 15 second textbook peek lifeline idea was a lot of fun to add to the game too.
The only problem I had was coming up with questions hard enough for the kids to actually want to use their lifelines...

I'm now working on another game show related game which we'll play next week with the grade 2 kids.
Based on Family Feud, I handed out a questionaire of about 15 questions last week, and have compiled the results. So now I can ask questions using the superlative forms related to things their grade though. ie: "What is the most popular animal among grade 2 students?"
They then have to guess what others would have said to continue... I'll let you know how it pans out.

I threw in some really obscure questions from New Crown 2 like

What does _______ want to be? astronaut, musician, tree doc... etc. They are unlikely to remember such specifics.

I agree though - The kids are a little hesitant to use their life-lines but it still adds a fun elelment to the game.

Sorry, I was unable to upload the questions - I'll try on Monday.
