just adding my two cents here...
kotaro was absolutely great.
i just got my car from him about a week ago
he replied to all my emails (almost immediately) and he answered all my questions very objectively
he assisted me with everything - even chatting to my supervisor over the phone when there was a misunderstanding about car insurance
friendly guy, very helpful - you can't go wrong.
i highly recommend him

Just wanted to recommend Kotaro as well. He gave me an amazing deal on my white-tag shaken and is extremely friendly to boot. He even fixed a few small problems for free.

Thank you for the recommendation Fred.

So I got a car through Kotaro myself, back in early February.  I have had no trouble with it and it runs exceptionally well.  Kotaro also helped me through the process of getting my shakko-shomei, giving me the forms that I needed and pointing me in the right direction.  On top of all that, he's a nice guy.  I highly recommend him if you want get a vehicle of your own.  And thanks Fred, for pointing me in his direction!

If you have car problems or just need a car call Kotaro. He is friendly and super helpful, speaking English is another plus.
He has very reasonable rates on his services. He saved me a bunch of money on my Shaken and even loaned me a car (no charge) while mine was getting inspected. He is also quite flexible with appointments I just shoot him an e-mail with what I need and when I have time and we work something out within a day or two.

Go to Kotaro if you want to save yourself many car related headaches. :)

Another Kotaro fan here.
Whether you need help with servicing, repairs, shaken, buying a car or even performance mods I  highly recommend him.

Hi Everyone.

So first the bad news.  I work for Borderlink lol.  So my salary isn't Jet Status.  So with that being said.  I do need a car to get around Yamanashi.  So what kind of damage am I looking at?

What will I need first and foremost?

Also when I mean damage, I mean like how much is the entire thing going to cost me with the services the licenses and buying the car?  100,000 - 400,000 yen?
I'm an okay mechanic with a GED.  The only thing I've ever been good at is be an outlaw.

Huge range of questions that need to be answered. I'll try to keep it simple though.

Do you drive manual cars?
Do you want a car to drive locally or road tripping?
Do you want a nice somewhat fancy car or bare bones?
Do you want it to be roomy?
Do you want a two or four door car?

There are tons more questions but I'll stop there.

If you're looking for cheap and working 150,000 to 200,000 should get you a good enough car with little trouble. Around 100,000 you'll be scratching to bottom of the barrel.

Well

Id prefer automatic.

2 door should suffice i suppose but to be honest;  If its a car, it works I should be fine.

I would mostly need it to go sightseeing around Yamanashi and go to the YETI social events and stuff as I do plan to stay here in Japan for a while.   So I guess im thinking i should find a layaway plan for the car.

Have you looked into the difference between white plates and yellow plates?

white plate(1000cc+)                 yellow plate(600cc)
bigger                                        smaller(they can get pretty small)
faster                                         slower
taxes are a far bit more             lower taxes
Registering is more of a pain     very easy to register
more gas                                   less gas
arguably safer                           theoretically more dangerous(due to small size)
nicer for road trips                     can be a pain on a road trip
entry 15-200,000yen                 entry 12-180,000yen

I think you'll actually find kei (yellow plate) cars are usually a little more expensive.

I don't know how it is with other kei cars, and it seems counterintuitive, but I feel like my kei car eats up gas like it's going out of style (it is, but I didn't tell my car).

lol it IS going out of style! your car probably already got the tweet :P

my best advice is if you want to keep it cheap, buy it used, hopefully with some shaken still on it(not sure if anyone mentionend shaken yet). Talk to Kotoro or there's another guy in Isawa where I've bought my last two cars from and he rocks.

Hey jack, I have a car that you can have for free if you aren interested.  it broke down on me a while ago and i have no idea why, but i just left it there because the shaken expired shortly after that.

if you want to pay the shaken and get it repaired its yours.  im going to call kotaro later and find out if its worth it to get those things done at all though.

holy crap why did i only see that now.

Well Jesse I will save up my money first before I make an actual commitment.  So if the car is still available I'm sure as hell game for it.  I mostly need it to get around Nash/Japan in general more than menial stuff.  So here's hoping I can do it soon!
