Why are there no lesson plans about advertising?
« on: September 28, 2009, 11:17:36 AM »
I have been unable to find any interesting lessons about adverts and advertising on any of the main EFL sites, and if I try to google it, I just get a load of adverts for EFL teachers back. I've also found it surprisingly difficult to find good adverts to use in class by googling. Everything seems either too verbose, or too heavily based on images/ideas.

And yet I have lesson on adverts in three of my textbooks!

Does anybody know of any good activities about adverts? Ideally something that is suitable for lower-level learners, that is exciting enough to entice even the most reluctant of (ie. all of my) students into participating?

Or, failing that, does anybody have any links to good adverts that I can use?

Thanks in advance etc!

Adverts really haven't come up in my textbooks so I have no lesson plans or games, but the grammar teachers did ask me to find some English adverts and I came up with this website:

http://www.nmauk.co.uk/nma/do/annaAwardsArchive?year=2008&month=11&archiveMode=3  it has a good selection of adverts.

Hope this helps.

Actually, I've just had an idea for a warm-up activity: can anybody think of English slogans that are used in current Japanese ad campaigns? eg. 'I'm lovin' it', which, I think, is still used by McDonald's in Japan...

EDIT:

Also:
"Finger lickin’ good!" KFC
“I feel Coke”
“Inspire The Next” Hitachi
“No Music No Life” Tower Records
“Power of Dreams” Honda
“Drive Your Dreams” Toyota
“Changes For the Better” Mitsubishi
“No More Rules” Kate makeup
“Like No Other” Sony
“Shift The Future” Nissan
“Idea For Life” Panasonic
“Make it Possible With Canon”
“Innovation For Tomorrow” Daihatsu

I don't watch TV but I think Knorr soup uses "hands to hands".

Totally stealing that - cheers Taurus!

It was actually my wife's idea. But I like it because many of my students are completely uninterested in English and consider it completely irrelevant, so I hope this shows them that actually they already know some.
