Definite/indefinite article
« on: November 18, 2009, 08:35:16 AM »
Are there any good resources or lesson plans for the use of the definite/indefinite article? My students really struggle with it. (They are SHS but seem to have a basic JHS sort of grasp on English.)

take a bunch of apples to class

set one apple aside as your apple "the" apple, the apple you chose, the apple you bit...a specific apple...this can be "his" "your" "her"
on the other end of the table have a bowl of the other 6 apples --- I like to equate a= any, any of the 6--it doesn't matter...

you could do this with groups of other stuff...just the first 5 minutes of class, move from apples to 1 pencil on one side of table, and a group of pencils at the other---
Can I have a (any pencil)?
Can I have the pencil? (the red pencil, that pencil...etc)

I realize this sounds vapid.  But I swear.  5 minutes with this exercise and it gives them an easy visual message they rarely forget...as long as they always talk about apples.
can you use this?

try it with boobies...

BTW, you might think about un-teaching the students that 'a' doesn't mean 'one'.  This point angers me greatly.
