the 2nd year I am coaching is really good and when I mentioned that to some teachers, they said it was because he lived in America for 6 months,  when he was 4

Sounds like legit reasoning to me...

introduction to foreign sounds at an early age can be beneficial, learning German and French at 17 was much easier for me than starting Japanese in my 20s.  But it makes me cringe when people say he/she did well because he is a foreigner or "hafu".

Here's a huge kicker, I was told today there will only be local compeititions for the Paul Rusch and Sugihara stories. I was told there will be no prefectural competition this year because it falls on the same day as a huge JTE's English open-class presentation.

Anyone going to the open-class presentation? My JTE signed me up for it so I wouldn't have to go to school (and said I could leave early), but I have a feeling it's going to be all JTEs.

The open-class presentation Kanto-wide. JTEs (and I think ALTs too) from multiple prefectures will be coming to it.

BTW, check out this link to Paul Rusch's story: http://www.ket.org/cgi-local/fw_comment.exe/db/ket/dmps/Programs?do=topic&topicid=LOUL110089&id=LOUL

I don't know about other locations, but for the contest in Otsuki (my schools, Uenohara schools, Otsuki and Saruhashi schools and anywhere else in that general area) the test is on Friday, Nov. 2nd, not the 3rd. Traditionally it has always been on a school day for us. I am not aware of the schedule for the more central parts of the prefecture.

The local competition in the Yamanashishi/Enzan area is being held October 25th. This round is typically judged by ALTs only, each of whom trained at least 1 student in the competition .  Not sure when the next level of competition will be held, but, it has never been held on a weekend (at least not in the past 5 years).

Also, my first year of speech contest training, I was given a HUGE guide (both in English and Japanese) on how to prep for and judge a speech contest.  Attached is an abridged version of the guide. It's based on the score sheet used at both the Yamanashishi/Enzan local level and then the next level after that as well (unless the score sheets changed last year)

Got word from a student of mine that the contest in Tsuru is on the 4th? Is that normal to be on a Sunday?
Wouldn't it be nice, to get on with my neighbours!
