JLPT 2011
« on: April 07, 2011, 11:01:46 AM »
Anyone going to take it in July?  The postmark deadline is April 28th.
I will probably go ahead and take n3 though I am not quite ready for it yet.  I took n4 and passed, but I haven't covered all the grammar points and kanji that are on n3, and probably can't do it by test time.  I think I may take it as a practice, though...

Ooh, thanks for the reminder.  I'll be taking it in July, though I haven't decided whether I'm going to do the N3 or N2 yet.

I failed N4 by two points, but I'm going to go for N3 anyway. But first, I need to check when my school festival is. Last year's July JLPT was during my school festival weekend.

keep in mind that the pass score is only a little bit above 50%  (It's 90 points out of 180 to pass the n4 level), so if you were close to that level, it may be difficult to pass the next level in a short time cause you are covering the half of n4 that you missed and the whole of n3 in 8 months.  I don't think I can pass n3, but my japanese teacher is urging me to take it as practice.

I have a pretty good mock exam book for n4, if you would like to borrow it.  It's my Japanese teacher's book, but I have had it for a while.  Welcome to borrow it as long as you write your answers on a separate sheet of paper instead of in the book.

Boo, I have school festival that weekend, so I can't take it until December.

keep in mind that the pass level is only a little bit above 50%  (It's 189 points out of 360 to pass), so if you were close to that level, it may be difficult to pass the next level in a short time cause you are covering the half of n4 that you missed and the whole of n3 in 8 months.  I don't think I can pass n3, but my japanese teacher is urging me to take it as practice.

Thanks for the insight.  :-)

Is the pass level the same for N2, when I took it the pass rate was like 70% for the N3 (back when there was no N5).  Debating whether to take N3 now, (the new N3) or go straight for N2... difficult...

That's not the pass rate for n3. It's how many points you need to pass the test.
I dunno how many people passed versus failed.

Sorry, I also posted it wrong.  I'll edit the original post.
There are 180 points on the test (I'm dumb and added up all the section points and added them to the overall score).  You need to pass each individual section with a minimum of 19 points.  On top of that, you need OVERALL to have at least 95 points to pass.
Still, you gotta score 53% or more of the points.  Lucky for us, they used scaled scores so they look at how you answer the questions and also take that into account.  I dunno how it works but i hope it works in all of our favors!  The pass marks seem low, but it sure doesn't seem to make the test any easier
http://www.jlpt.jp/e/guideline/pdf/understandingscorereport.pdf

According to this, you need 90 points to pass on n2, along with passing each individual section.

Thanks, kind of what I figured.  I used the wrong term when I said pass rate  :-P It would appear that it has gotten a lot easier to pass than from 2-3 years ago when I took it.... hopefully  :|

its not supposed to be any easier to pass, they increased the amount of material that could be on the test, so you have to study a lot of stuff that might not even be on it.  Then they lowered the passing score, with aim that actually passing it is just as difficult (since theres more material).  i dont know if the pass rate has changed, but they didnt intend for it to all that much.
so i have heard.

Perhaps for July, Yeti can pre-order applications, say 20, shell out the 10,000 yen and sell them through the site.  Maybe even for a profit!!

Perhaps people can go to the shops early enough to pick up their own application?
