Soooo , in the same vein, I should be able to purchase a used iPhone as well?  Anyone seen one/have one for sale?
They actually had a whole case of them at Mondai Shoten when I was there this weekend. The prices ranged depending on how old/beat up they were, but it didn't seem too unreasonable

One interesting thing that happened to me recently when signing up for a smartphone with AU:

I signed up using my Japanese moped license rather than my gaijin card. The guy didn't even bother asking me how long my visa is supposed to last. I explained to the guy that I do have to stop contract in less than a year and he seemed fine with it.

Did you pay the purchase price (for new subscribers) upfront?

Yeah, the above never happens to me.  Softbank needed 4 hours of me yelling at them before they finally consented to reducing the contract from 24 months to 12. :x

What happened was that since i switched from a different provider, AU gave me 2 man credit, and I decided to dish out the other 1 man 500 yen to pay off the phone itself (3 man blah blah yen), just b/c I didn't want to bother with figuring how much i owed in the end. But I think he would have been willing to let me pay the phone in monthly installments until i cancelled contract and I would pay the rest.

On phones...anyone know how to get mp3s working on your phone? And how to set them as a ringtone and all that?
I just can't seem to find them no matter where I copy them.

I haven't worked it out on my phone, but have you got the English manual,
It would be here
http://www.au.kddi.com/english/torisetsu/list_is.html

The right hand side column is the one for English manuals.

not the case. I sent my friend down there to do that too and they need more. You don't need a credit card, but they do want to collect information on you. It doesn't make sense at all, since it's a prepaid phone and there's no way you could owe them money, but it takes a long time to get one of those phones set up. I think it took me like, 2 hours and I had to give them my banking information as well as my gaijin card.

I have a question for Softbank customers. When I switched over to them 18months ago they said I had to pay by credit card. Is this the case with other Softbank users??

My credit card is actually a debit mastercard which just takes the money from my Australian bank account so I'd much rather have it direct debited fromy my Japanese account, or even pay it at a conbini.

They actually had a whole case of them at Mondai Shoten when I was there this weekend. The prices ranged depending on how old/beat up they were, but it didn't seem too unreasonable

it's MANDAI Shoten
