St. Patrick's Day Parade: 2013 edition!
« on: February 03, 2013, 10:18:22 AM »
As some of you know, every year they hold a Paddy's Day parade in Harajuku. It's that time again, and they are looking for volunteers! Last year a small handful of us made the trek and participated, and it was HUGE fun! Some of us even made it to the front page of the English version of the Japan Times! Check out last year's thread (near the end) for pictures. http://www.yetijapan.com/forum/index.php?topic=8240.0

The Parade is held by Irish Network Japan: http://www.irish-network-japan.com/en

There is a volunteer meeting on Feb. 17th, but as last year, I don't believe that participation is required. The day of, March 17th, is pretty much an all day event, beginning with stuffing information packets, then taking to the streets to hand out said packets, parade set up, then the actual parade, then clean up. Our time and efforts are compensated with a bento lunch, some nifty t-shirts, and possibly a few other goodies. Obviously you don't actually have to be Irish to participate as a volunteer, but it'd be great to get a few 本物!

Here's more information...sadly it's all in Japanese (Even though it says this is the English portion of the website. Oops?):

Here's the sign up for volunteers:

Once you sign up you will be included in the mailing list that will give you all of the details of time, meeting place, etc. Since the date usually coincides with the Spring YETI Pub Quiz, people often leave from Otsuki after the event on Saturday night and head in to Tokyo to continue the party, stay at a hostel, then get together to either watch or participate in the parade on Sunday.

Come join us for this FANTASTIC event! They always hold the parade on a Sunday, and this year we are just lucky that St. Paddy's actually falls on a Sunday!

When i first came to japan in 2004 i worked in Shinagawa's Dubliners and I met my wife, who worked at an Irish pub, at the St Paddy's day parade!
We always celebrate it but haven't been back to the parade in all these years.
Wouldn't it be nice, to get on with my neighbours!

Was there a deadline to sign up to volunteer? I skimmed the Japanese, but I couldn't find that info.

You know...I'm not sure. I don't thiiiink so, but to be safe I'd just do it as soon as you can/decide. Probably like two weeks before is a good time frame.
