Getting a new computer :/
« on: September 05, 2013, 12:15:56 AM »
So, my computer is in the process of breaking - slowly, painfully, and in a way that could have me with a decently working computer for months or leave me with only half a working screen tomorrow. Obviously, I'd like to replace it before the latter half of that sentance occurs. It's a bit complicated in that shipping from the US is really expensive, due to the battery, and it's also not certain that the computer will arrive undamaged, so I want to at least investigate getting a computer here.

The biggest hurdle is that I know I want a US keyboard. Supposedly, I can get a computer with one even though I'm in Japan. At least, the internet claims I can, but the internet lies, so I'm asking here. Has anyone tried/had success replacing their computer here in Japan? How difficult/expensive was it? Are Japanese keyboards the only option, or do larger stores (say in Tokyo) stock computers meant for export that have different ones?

By the sounds of your message, it looks like you are talking about a laptop rather than a desktop.

Laptops are pricey here..much pricier than in the states. There are one or two companies who do English keyboards, when I looked about 18 months ago, but they weren't particularly cheap to be honest.
This one wasn't too bad price wise

However, although I can't compare the specs properly, the 98,000 yen laptop looks like it is $600 on Amazon.

The only other cheap way is to find someone who'll bring it over for you. Was Amazon shipping that much more?

I admit I haven't actually looked on Amazon yet, though I'll do that now. Shipping from the states is expensive because of the battery, it'll probably run up between 75-100$ just for shipping alone. Any ideas about getting a non-japanese keyboard?

I know apple computer are not for everyone, including myself, but apple does sell computers with english keyboards.  The only stipulation is that you need to order it directly from apple and you will need to wait for shipping.
