Tokyo International Film Festival 2013
« on: September 22, 2013, 09:53:50 PM »
The Tokyo International Film Festival is coming soon! October 17th - 25th. Tickets go on sale October 5th here: http://portal.tickebo.jp/pc/en/1310-tiff/ (you can pay in the konbini). All movies that are not in English will have English subtitles, including Japanese titles. The full list is here: http://tiff.yahoo.co.jp/2013/en/lineup/list.php

I've filtered out the English language movies that are showing as a quick guide for anyone who's interested (although it's a great opportunity to watch some Japanese/non-English language cinema with English subtitles):

The Best Offer
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJGleGyahC8
Romantic drama starring Geoffrey Rush, Jim Sturgess and Donald Sutherland set in the world of high-end art auctions and antiques. Excited? Neither am I, but my friend saw this online and she really liked it.

Captain Phillips
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sp6jpeDeQmE
Tom Hanks vs Somali pirates. The director is Paul "shaky cam" Greengrass, who made "Bloody Sunday", "United 93" and the "Bourne Supremacy/Ultimatum" movies. I'm sold.

The Double
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=igd7tLNKuAY
Jesse Eisenberg in a movie about a doppelganger or something. Sorry, the boring trailer put me off.

Blue is the Warmest Color (a.k.a. ADELE: CHAPTERS 1 & 2)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FG1Za0VvUrM
Actually this isn't an English language movie but it's the winner of this year's Cannes Film Festival. Spielberg's choice. The lead actresses won the award along with the director, which was an unusual move. The running time is a whopping 3 hours but apparently it really is one of those rare, painfully affecting dramas that rips your heart out. I want to see this more than any of the others, by a mile. Expect nudity. It is French after all.

Drinking  Buddies
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxuxkQF7Bak
Comedy with Olivia Wilde, Jake Johnson, Anna Kendrick and Ron Livingston. Two co-workers at a brewery have the hots for each other, but are both in relationships.

The Railway Man
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ksrkKXoEJbM
Colin Firth and Nicola Kidman fish for Oscars in a WW2 movie.

The Bling Ring
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4LzhgExvrc
Sofia Coppola movie about shallow teenagers stealing things from shallow celebrities. Features Emma Watson attempting an American accent.

The Sessions
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fy2y7UIpgP4
I've seen this, it's great. It's a true story about a housewife (Helen Hunt) who acts as a "hands-on" sex therapist for a disabled man (John Hawkes) who would otherwise never experience sexual intimacy. It's one of those surprising things that you've probably never thought about, but actually exists. It's called "sex surrogacy".

Behind the Candelabra
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fp3wAyRf15c
Steven Soderbergh movie with Michael Douglas as an appropriately super creepy Liberace and Matt Damon as his boy toy. Rob Lowe is also in it as a plastic surgeon with an overstretched face - is that what Rob Lowe actually looks like now or is it a special effect?

Parkland
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SgPjt_BRLvY
This is an ensemble about John F. Kennedy's assassination. Zac Efron, Marcia Gay Harden, Billy Bob Thornton, Jacki Weaver, Paul Giamatti.

Beyond Two Souls
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FKmj84BKsyc
This is actually an upcoming Playstation game from the makers of "Heavy Rain", mo-capped by Ellen Page and Willem Dafoe. I'm really confused...how are they going to "screen" this?

Hey Karurosu  do you have a general idea how much the tickets are?

I clicked on the links but gave no basic information about ticket prices

They were reasonably priced last year. All competition screenings were like 1000 yen, while special screenings were 1800 yen. The opening film (Captain Phillips this year) was 2000 yen. I just hope good movies are scheduled for the weekend.

There was a special pass for the weekend last year, it was 7000 yen. I assume the website will update sometime this week with more details. Actually, here's the 2013 price list...http://tiff.yahoo.co.jp/2013/en/ticket/pricelist.php
