Ski Trip II - The Snow must go on!
« on: January 17, 2014, 01:30:40 PM »
***** Places will be allocated based on how quickly I receive your RSVP. A full RSVP is required, minor details can be adjusted later*****

What: Skiing and snowboarding in Nagano
When: February 21st(pm) – 23rd 2014
Where: Aqua Alpine hotel / Hakuba Goryu Resort (http://www.aquaalpine.com/)

How much:  19,000yen (Hotel + 2day pass),  16,500  (Hotel + 1 day pass), 14,000yen (Hotel only)

The February Ski trip will be generally of the same format as the January trip. So for those who did not go on it, click the link for the full explanation of the ski trip.
http://www.yetijapan.com/forum/index.php?topic=9080.0

The main differences are that we are staying at the Aqua Alpine hotel which is a 4 Star hotel.  A few of you have already been there, so will know how sweet it is and it is only a few minutes walk from the slopes. It is the top rated hotel in all of Hakuba on tripadvisor.com
http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g1120615-d1234902-Reviews-Aqua_Alpine_Hotel-Hakuba_mura_Kitaazumi_gun_Nagano_Prefecture_Chubu.html

To keep costs down, the rooms will have extra futons put in them to make them like a ryokan. We have the whole bottom floor and two rooms upstairs to ourselves which is pretty sweet but we are limited to 40 people. After the initial 40, accommodation will be at Lady Diana's as at the January trip. There are no Double/Quad/Single night options at Aqua Alpine but if we use Lady Diana, they may become an option.
The package includes 2 nights accommodation, 2 breakfasts and dinner on Saturday night.

If you want to try the other resorts, get in touch with me as I may be able to get discounted tickets for them.
There is no party room at the hotel, however we can use the facilities of the hotel including the lounge, bar and pool room. The bar will run happy hour for us all weekend. We just need to be mindful of the other guests.

I am using the same rental company as before, so the prices are.
                    Ski/Board + Boots - 1800/2800yen for one/two days
                    Ski/Board trousers and jacket - 1800/2800yen for one/two days
                    Goggles  - 500/1000yen for one/two days
                    Gloves  - 500/1000yen for one/two days

As there is usually very little demand for lessons, I cannot book our own instructor. Hence, lessons will be 6000 yen per person for a two hour lesson. If there is enough demand for lessons, I will look into hiring an instructor and getting those prices down. Hopefully we can get a 3 hour deal for 5250 a person.
That is about it really. All I need from you is an RSVP in this format

1. Name and prefecture :
2. What package i.e. 2 nights and 2 day pass
3. Gear Rental : Yes / no ?
if yes please say what : (skis or board / boots / clothing )
    Shoe size :  **cm
Height: **cm (if you require board / skis )
Clothes sizes – if you know them in Japanese sizes.
    Gloves/Goggles ?
4. Transport: required / not required / got a lift
5. Other Information: (vegetarian meals required etc,)
6. Lessons? Boarding or Skiing? What level are you?
7. Would you be interested in passes for other resorts in the Hakuba area if I can get them? Do you want to get a hoodie or polo from the January trip?

Please RSVP by February 14th.

I haven't launched the facebook event yet, but I am to do that after my afternoon classes today.

As there are only 40 places at Aqua Alpine, I have to be quite strict with the RSVP process in order to ensure fairness for everyone (and to make my life easier too)!

I'll put all of you on the list but only Terra has filled out a full RSVP. So if someone from another ken sends a full RSVP, they will jump everyone but Terra.

Thanks Carlos,
Yep, pretty much. I put that clearly at the top when I first posted the event too. It's basically so that people don't cockblock hotel rooms, which happens on this trip and also the double rooms for the first trip.
It's the fairest way I can find to prevent this issue.

Yeah I saw that, but I misunderstood it/skimmed over the text. I guess I thought of a "full RSVP" as a super reassuring and committed yes, as opposed to the details, which I assumed to be the minor aspect that could be changed at a later date. Brain fart!

RSVP for 2 nights.

7. Is it possible for the design to be printed in white rather than black?

Ski pass and rentals have been updated.
As for the white instead of black, I am going to say no for two reasons.

1. The design looks strange in white ink. Totoro looks possessed!
2. Also, I think he'll have to make new screens or really clean the old ones to prevent ink contamination. I don't know how much that would increase the cost of the hoodie. I think previously he's quoted me 10,000 for either the new screens or perhaps a one off polo.

Hey Brian,
If we have a ton of people who don't have cars/licences, could you help by driving either a rental car or driving people in your car?

I'll look into lessons for you and let you know. I'm really hoping we get enough lessons to make it worthwhile hiring an instructor. You are a beginner right?

Ah I see. Yeah, I wouldn't bother if it were going to be so expensive. Personally I'd have taken the "possessed"-looking one :| I thought the dark blue and the black was hardly contrasted enough on the actual sweaters, so you can't even really see the design at all unless you're really looking at it up-close. Thanks for looking into the colors though.

I agree. A lighter blue would have been awesome. The polos look pretty good though.
No worries though. It did take us quite a while to settle on the right colours though.

Heyoo,

My winter tires in my car are too big so when 3 people sit in my car it scrapes on the tire lol because my shocks aren't so great...but I wouldn't mind driving another car. How much more would it cost to rent a car for everyone?

No way. That's hilarious!
I'll get back to you about the driver/passenger/renting situation. The event been up for less than a week and I don't know if we'll have to rent. I hope that we don't have to rent at all or anything. Bear with me as I work out what is going on.

Hey,
A quick update on the status of the trip.
1)   We have 70 full RSVPs at the moment, hence I have increased the bookings to 85 places between both hotels.
2)   If you are based in Shizuoka, send your RSVP to Jeff Moses, otherwise you can post on the event wall or send it to me.
3)   If you want a hoodie/polo shirt, I need to know by Feb 10th. After that, I’ll have to keep checking with the printer. If you want one but can’t make the trip, perhaps a friend can help you get one.
4)   Sat Dinner is going to be buffet style. For those with dietary restrictions, I’ll message you with the menu when we’ve finalised it.
5)   Happo-one passes. I’ve finally found some discounted tickets.
Normal prices are 4,800 for 1 day, 8,400 for 2 day pass.
I can get Sat only for 4,500. Sun only for 4,000 and 2 day for 7,500.
Additonally, you need to pay 500 yen deposit for the chip when you pick it up.
6)   For lesson people, I’ll also be messaging you when I’ve got some more details about times and location. The lessons will be at Goryu, which excludes you from a Happo-one ticket on that day.

Hey Everybody,
A few things...
Here is everyone's rental info and so on
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1aQZEN35xDQApRPmK9-TX8HkBQVzsCKlRgPP_paPMduU/edit?usp=sharing

For those with dietary needs, I will be agreeing the food menu and sending it to you in the next few days.
I'll update you when the room assignments are done too.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Finally, a lot of people (especially in Yamanashi) have been asking about the weather after Snowmageddon. Unfortunately I don't have a crystal ball, no matter how much I would love to. All I can do is go with the facts that I can ascertain from verifiable sources. Not someone's guestimation.

As things stand, the roads are all being cleared as we speak. Michael Martin has seen snowploughs from as far away as Niigata, come to clear the roads, so it's ongoing progress. How long, how fast etc? Well, that's the golden question isn't it?

According to http://traininfo.jreast.co.jp/train_info/e/kanto.aspx,
the Chuo line is now open west of Kofu although Shelly just reported seeing a Train at Otsuki. If that is the case, then it is close to being open again, albeit probably a restricted service for a day or two.
The Minobu line is currently suspended for a few days between Minobu and Kofu.
http://traininfo.jr-central.co.jp/sep/pc/senku13/P02.html

So, all things considered, the situation is improving all the time. Is it perfect? Nope, but improving.

Also, for those wondering about the possible snowfall on Thursday, according to JMA's weekly forecast, it is 4-19mm. That is less than 2cm (worst case scenario).
http://www.jma.go.jp/en/week/321.html
This is then going to be followed by sunshine on the friday

So, I am taking each day as it comes and seeing how the situation is. I am checking websites and talking with the hotel too.

Morning Everyone,
This should be the last message before we all set off for the trip. Here is an update for all concerned.

1. Rentals, Rooms and most other info can be found at the link below. There were a ton of changes today and so a lot of the rooms had to be changed. I've tried to honour all of your requests though.

2. For those driving from Yamanashi, Shizuoka, Tokyo and Kanagawa, all the expressways are open again in Yamanashi. There are speed restrictions and some parts are down to one lane. Also the odd service area is shut too. However, these restrictions are getting lifted all the time. So it will make the journey slightly slower due to this traffic but nothing more than that.
For Shizuoka drivers, you can take the expressway from Fujiyoshida again which would be the fastest way.

3. Below are the links for the driving instructions to both hotels. I know that in this day and age, with smart phones, GPS, Navi and the such like, this is a little redundant but it doesn’t hurt right?

If you are using the Chuo Expressway (Yamanashi/Shizuoka/Kanagawa and Tokyo), use this link

If using the Kan-etsu/Joshin-etsu expressway (Gunma/Chiba and possibly Saitama/Tokyo), use this link

http://yetijapan.com/docs/ski_trip_2014/Hakuba%20trip%20direction%20-%20Chiba+Gunma+Saitama+Ishikawa%20-%20Feb%2019th%202014.pdf

Ishikawa peeps, sorry but I’m not sure which direction you’ll be coming from. Either document will give you detailed instruction for the final part.

4. Those with Dietary needs, I have yet to get the menu to share with you...but I did send on your info and it should be covered by the chef. Or there will be enough variety within the buffet for that.
As soon as I get it, I'll send it on to you.

5. Can everyone pay me on the Friday night? It makes my life a lot easier! I should be awake quite late. The bigger problem is how drunk will I be?

6. If there are any issues, my number is 080 5180 6736

Cheers,

Fred

Hey,
Thank you everybody for coming on the second ski trip of the year.
I really hope you enjoyed it and the gorgeous weather that we had.
I hope you all got home safely although I heard the traffic sucked pretty bad for some people. Also, thank you for helping people with rides to and from the trip.

It was great to meet you all and catch up with some old friends and make some new ones too.
Some of the highlights for me included the piano playing…so much awesome piano playing.
And then the Saturday night meal. I had four helpings, it was that good. Especially the bread and butter pudding!
However, I would especially like to thank everyone who came again. You all contributed to the great atmosphere and a wonderful trip.

A few things though.
1)  A pair of grey socks and snowboarding pants were found in the Karaoke room. Let me know if they are yours .
2) If anyone still has the chip from the ski pass, just give it to me and I will reimburse you for the 1000yen.
3) A few people wanted a hoodie and asked me over the weekend. I can do another print run, so just send me a message and we’ll work something out.

Thanks a lot for making it a great weekend!!!!
