I detest running, but have always harboured a secret desire to run a marathon or parts thereof. I don't know a lot about running however...
Assuming my endurance etc is up to par, is that enough time to get my technique up to, say, 11km or optomistically 27km standard? Seems to me to be fairly safe.
Approx how long (a time) is that?

Jon, if I can do the 11k you should definitely be able to do at least that.

I'll give it a couple of practise bashes over the next couple weeks. I don't have trouble running 11kmish, but I'm not a very fast runner.
I'd also like to shoot for the 27 km if I could do it.

I'm possibly interested in doing the 11k. I havent run a Marathon for. . . a very long time, and am curious as to whether I can do it again. If I continue my morning jogs, which usually last about 40 minutes, I think I might be OK.

I'll think about it  :-)

I'm signed up for the 11km as well! I think it's a doable distance for beginners if you practice a bit before hand. Last year I did my first 10k around this time of year without much practice and I was ok (although very slow!). I haven't done the Kawaguchi-ko course before but I've heard from my JTE that it's fairly flat compared to some other 10ks in Yamanashi. So it's a good one to try!

If anyone's interested, there's also a 10k in Yatsugatake about a month before (October 24th), but that one is a lot steeper. I believe registration for that one is open through September 30th. Here's the link (sorry, Japanese!):

Awesome, Mig and Gypsy! 11km is a doable distance for everyone, even if you hate running. I had a couple of friends do the 11km last year and they were, what I consider "not runners", and they finished in 1:15 and 1:30.

The 11km course has a short uphill at the beginning of the race and then a short downhill and then goes flat for the rest of the race. Basically, you start in the parking lot across from the Lawson and start running left around the lake until you get to the bridge. Then, you take a left and start climbing up street all the way to Route 139 (the road with Bell shopping center & Off-House). At the 139, you spin around and start coming back down the same street. Then you take a left when you get to Gustos and run a couple km and then take a right and start your final descent down towards the lake. Once you hit the lake, the rest of the course is flat. You take a right at the lake and hug it all the way back to the finish line.

The 27km I did last year. It has the same course as the 11km, except where the 11kmers take a right to go back to the finish, the 27kmers go across thr bridge and start running around the whole lake. I'm not what you would consider a fast runner. My time last year was 2:55.
