Annual YETI Thanksgiving Potluck!!
« on: October 29, 2013, 12:18:22 PM »
Who doesn't love pigging out on yummy food provided by all of your pals? It's time once again for the...

~Annual YETI Thanksgiving Potluck!!~
When: Sunday, November 17 from 1-5pm
Where: 山梨働く婦人の家・勤労者福祉センター
Address: Yamanashi Prefecture, Yamanashishi, Kamikanogawa 1348
Website: http://www.city.yamanashi.yamanashi.jp/gover/public/health/yume_work.html
Google Maps Link: http://goo.gl/maps/x0Zuk

Cost: Free!
Transportation: The center is a 10-15 minute walk from Yamanashi-Shi station. If you prefer to drive, carpooling is best as parking is limited.

Additional Info: Since this is a potluck, please bring enough food or drinks for at least a few people, and let us know what you're bringing so not everybody brings the same thing. We know that it may be hard for some of you to cook in your apartments so feel free to buy something to share :-D
Please be sure to bring serving utensils for your dishes!!

The council will be buying chicken and/or turkey and providing spoons, forks, cups, plates etc.
Also, this event will still be NON-ALCOHOL like it has been in the past.  8-)

And once again: when you RSVP, please let us know what you're bringing!!

Quick note for people coming, there is an Ichiyama grocery store south by southwest of the building (also on Wagner's map) if you need to pick anything in particular up. Of course, there is also that lovely Manriki Park west of the location for a good Thanksgiving football game too  :-D

Normally I bring mashed potatoes but there seems to be an excess this year, so I'll bring mac and cheese.

Nick is coming but I have no idea what he is bringing.

I'll bring a couple types of soft drinks, tea, and cups. I'll try to get ice too if I can. If people like any particular drinks, let me know.

I don't know if it's too late, too much of a hassle, or if anyone else would even be interested, but I would be willing to pitch in a few hundred yen if it meant we get actual turkey.

We are hoping to get a turkey from Cosco if they have one that will fit in one of our ovens. We won't know until we go on Saturday, though.

They certainly had them when I went, but they are HUUUUUGE. I hope they have smaller ones when yall go.

Though I will say, even if you do get a smaller one they are probably frozen, and you may not have time to thaw AND cook a turkey for Sunday evening if you buy it on Saturday.

Yeah, I don't know the size of your ovens but it won't fit in Wag's or really any table top oven. You might be able to work around it by cutting it in half and doing it haphazardly that way.
This is an example of what was there when Terra and I went to Costco last month: http://yoyomarket.jp/Butterball-Premium-Young-Turkey-(Frozen-14-to-16-pounds)-p559.html
This is probably the exact same thing, actually. They are supposed to thaw for a full day before being cooked.  They aren't designed for any table top ovens, really but they do fit in most ovens the size that you have in your schools.  They might have smaller ones but the smaller birds were chickens when we went.

Last year, we resorted to buying pre-cooked chickens from Costco and then heating up in the microwave last year.  They are much smaller but you need to buy several.

The Cosco chickens are our back-up plan this year as well.  We had considered buying turkey online, but it was hard to justify the price when we couldn't know the size for sure.

Hello everyone,

I have a few announcements regarding this Sunday's Thanksgiving potluck:

1. Parking is going to be tight, so please carpool as much as possible. We will have about 20 parking spaces for the event. Any more will have to be put in the overflow car park about a five minute walk away. The venue is also only a ten minute walk from Yamanashi-Shi station.

2. We will do our best but please be prepared to take your own trash home with you.

3. We will be having an open YETI council meeting after the thanksgiving event at L-river in Yamanashi-Shi. Please join us if you'd like to learn more about how we plan our events.

I've easily made a 14/16 butterball turkey in my oven here in Kofu.  Went over well at my potluck last fall.  I've cooked turkeys for y'all before (with the exception of last year) I can order one in time, but a cook time of 4 hours and a cost of 5,885 (with delivery)  I'd need the costs reimbursed :(

EDIT sorry, I've checked COSTCO delivery times and the earliest is November 17th at noon.   I can cook a bird with a quick water thaw, but that would take an extra hour -3 in a water bath.  So if anyone can get a saturday delivery, it's still possible.

Good morning, everyone.

Two more days until the potluck! This is a reminder for everyone that you don't have to cook something for this event. You can buy something to bring, which will be whole-heartedly appreciated.

Also, if you RSVPed as "Going" but haven't said what you'll be bringing, please let us know. Thanks!

This helps us a lot as some of the council will be changing their dishes if we are too heavy on one type of food i.e desserts.
