Sending Money by Bank Transfer
The following guide has been created to help JETs and other foreigners living in Japan who are unfamiliar with the process of sending money by bank transfer in Japan. I hope you find the following useful; I would appreciate any feedback you might have. Thank you, and good luck!

* Before you head to the ATM, please make sure you have the following with you:

Your bank card and cash (if you plan to transfer money this way); The bank company, branch name and account number to which you are sending money (In both the Japanese and Roman alphabet).

  1. From this screen, select 振込
    1. If you are sending money after bank hours a screen will appear notifying you that the money will not be transferred until the following business day (e.g. Monday morning if you send on Friday night). Simply press 確認
  2. Select how you will send money:
    1. If you will be paying by cash, select the option with the kanji 現金
    2. If you will be transferring the money directly from your bank account, simply insert your bank card.
  3. Enter your pin number, then press 訂正
  4. Select how you will enter the information of the remittee:
    1. If you have already made transfers to a specific account and have a card to do so, select the top option. See step 11;
    2. If you are going to make this transfer by entering the information of the person/company to whom you are sending money, select 振込先入力 See step 5.
  5. If you are sending to a person/company that uses 山梨中央銀行 press that button. Otherwise, select 銀行 if you are sending money to a different bank.
  6. Select the bank company by selecting the first letter of the bank name. For example, if you are sending money to a Mitsubishi (三菱 bank, select
    1. Please note, only the katakana alphabet will appear.
  7. Next, a screen will appear with all the bank company names that begin with that letter. Select from this list the bank which you are sending money to.
  8. Select the branch you are sending to by selecting the first letter of that branch name, just like you did when entering the bank company name.
    1. Sometimes, only one branch will appear; other times, though, several options will appear on the screen at which time you should select the appropriate branch.
  9. Please select what type of account you are sending to:
    1. 普通 means normal and, in this case, indicates you are sending to a standard account. The person and/or company to whom you are transferring money will tell you, in both Japanese and English, which type of account they use.
  10. Enter the bank number (口座番号) for the account to which you are sending money, then press確認 or 訂正.
  11. Enter the amount of money you wish to send and press 確認.
  12. Two screens will appear asking you to confirm (確認) the information you have entered:
    1. The first will have the information of the remmittee and also how much money you are sending and the fee for your bank transfer (varies on the amount you are sending but is usually between 100 and 1,000 yen);
    2. The second has your name and your phone number (this will appear as all zeros if you have not registered this information with your bank).
  13. After you have pressed 確認a screen will appear asking if you would like to register the information for the person/company to whom you have sent money:
    1. If you plan on sending money to the same person/company in the future you may want to press 登録するto make future transfers easier;
    2. If you do not plan on sending money to the same person/company in the future, press   登録しない.
  14. Take the printed out receipt and breathe a sigh of relief because you have successfully transferred money—in a foreign language! If you are unsure you did things correctly, just e-mail the appropriate person/company and ask if the money has been received.おつかれさま!
